Can anyone recommend a good adhesive remover, i have taken off old labels on the sides of my van, but now left with the sticky backing, any help would be welcome.

wd40
lighter fluid??
Surely anything spirit based ?
White spirit/turps.
Try a small area first though.
Saw Kim and Aggie use mayonaisse but that was on stickers of fridges etc. They let it soak in for a few mins and then used a plastic scraper. Dont know if it would work on a van though. Agree with Rowanwitch about wd forty, moves most sticky stuff
olive oil
For large areas I use Woodhardener to remove sticky glue. It`s the same a nail varnish remover and will also stick together some plastics. Very useful stuff, but the fumes may make you dizzy so use in a well ventilated room.
we used vinegar to get rid of adhesive residue on the car, it doesn't damage paintwork
T-cut

and then a good wax polish.
