Steel pipe connectors

I need to cut into an old 1" steel water pipe to check the flow rate. What is the best way to re-connect the cut pipe. I thought about inserting a short pice of alkathene pipe, but can not find connectors which will go on the metal pipe at one end and onto the alkathene at the other.

Can't you replace the pipe with 28mm?

Thanx albags. It would mean laying 40 metres from stop tap to house. If I can half it to find which section is furred up / blocked it could save a big job excavating in tarmac etc.

You can get a thread cutting die (from a hire shop)to thread the cut ends of the steel pipe. They are held in a rachet deevice which enables the thread to be cut at the bottom of a hole in the ground.

I don't know if this idea would be suitable but if you go to a Motor spares shop they sell various sizes of rubber radiator hose and metal hose clips.
If it is going to be re-buried then the joint would have to be covered with tar or pitch to protect it.
Just a thought, another alternative.

I've used Wak's idea before, but only as a temp. measure. Mains pressure eventually blows them out :o(
As Jom says, you could rent a thread cutting kit with standard, threaded jointers.
Possibly sleeve it with a bigger diameter piece, and gas, or electric weld it.
I don't know what the outside diameter is offhand, but try an assortment of olives, and re-join with a simple compression joint.
