Help ! Our spare duvet has been stored under the bed and now has a 'musty' smell, any ideas on how to get rid of this - apart from dry cleaning it (too expensive) ? I hung it out in the garden yesterday when it was windy but that didn't help . . .

I wash mine regularly .. If not feather/down, take to a launderette.

usually that old musty smell won't really go completely. If you've tried airing it, spraying with fabric freshener etc, then maybe you're stuck with it. Maybe just buy a new one. There are plenty cheapies on the market in the likes of Argos. Good luck anyway.
If it has a synthetic filling you can wash it by soaking overnight it in a bathfull of warm water with washing powder or your choice dissolved in it. It will need several changes of cold water to get rid of the washing chemicals and leave it to drain well between changes of water. If you can get it in a spin drier ti drain it so much the better. It's going to take several days altogether.

thank you all for your ideas and help (and so fast !)
I'm with janbee, if it's that bad, it'll be cheaper to buy a new one than the cost of dry cleaning or taking it to the laundrette.
