Doctor Warns Of DIY Risks
Doing DIY jobs around the home yourself can be fun and saves money. But it seems we need to take more time to consider the health and safety issues involved in Doing It Yourself.
Making a few home improvements could be detrimental to your health, with medical experts highlighting the risks associated with common DIY in the home.
An Ulster-based doctor highlights the fact that DIY is responsible for thousands of injuries each year, many of which are serious with long-term ramifications. A consultant in A&E at Craigavon Area Hospital, states that around 20,000 serious eye injuries occur each year, and the figures are thought to be increasing.
The doctor warns that homeowners need to exercise caution when undertaking DIY projects, urging people to wear eye protection.
"Something as simple as drilling a hole to put up a shelf can cause a serious injury," he stated.
"Injuries can cause permanently reduced vision, blindness or even loss of an eye, but are easily preventable by using eye protection."
Figures state that nearly two thirds of all those injured through DIY tasks are men, most of whom were not wearing eye protection at the time of their accident. Cutting corners could mean putting yourself at risk, and it can end up costing more than you think.
The Department of Trade and Industry says it is time DIY enthusiasts took more care of themselves. It says the right tools and protective equipment should always be used and plenty of time allowed to do the job thoroughly and carefully. The DTI continues stating instructions should always be followed and extra care taken with power tools.
Before you start any job, you need to weigh it up and decide whether it is something you can manage yourself or whether you need to get in the experts.
Home improvement and DIY, however, continues to prove popular among UK householders seeking to add value to their properties at minimal cost, although consumers may wish to consider taking out home insurance to cover any accidents.
