Could you tell me what benifits the hard disc type has over the standard DVD recorder.....Are they of a better quality for example or just holds more info.

This is off at a bit of a tangent but quite a few of the DVD writers that you can slot into your PC (at least the current ones on the market) are not compatible with DVD RAM which is what the ones that plug into your TV often use : the ones that write to a CD/DVD disc at least!
This will obviously change in the near future but the question you ask is no different from a computer.
Do you want to store all your valuables on an unending supply of CDs or on ONE hard disk (of limited capacity) ?
As I understand it (and I could be wrong) the HDD types are infinitely re-writable and can hold more info than CD/DVD's.  DVD-R/RW have a reputation for losing their data, or so I hear.

hdd recorders simply allow you to store and access easily all progs.they will hold much more info than a dvd.

often wondered why there arent more sky+ hdd only systems out there - cant see the need for dvd at all

just yesterday was browsing thru some dvd mags and saw a nice combination from JVC  a DVD recorder +hdd

so you can record about 300 hours of tv to the hdd and then transfer (if you want to ) any of the same onto dvd....and then archive it is suppose....or perhaps a complete series ......was a bit pricy though ...about 700.....

another version was vcr +dvd recorder...if you got lots of tapes and want to convert them to dvd for whatever reason this one will do it with one button record......again a bit pricy......

my bro in law has a Panasonic HDD+DVD-R combined - you use the HDD for everyday recording and the DVD-R to archive stuff you want to keep - genius!
