How do commercial furniture producers get a smooth finish on painted wood products. or varnished even. Do they spray it or dip it? Is it a special fast drying paint or something?

I think most industrial finishes are sprayed on.

A window shutter manufacturer was telling me the other day that people want 'proper' wooden shutters but only when they have gone to a lot of trouble spray painting them so they look as smoot as uPVC!
spray & then possibly bake...
I guess that smooth are less likely to rot quickly.

I like wood, but it's such a pain when one finds a chunk of the window frame needs chopping and filling (sorry recent ongoing task).
