I have one of the roller ball Dysons, mine gave a couple of little coughs and stopped dead. I phoned the Dyson people for an engineer (took ages to get through), she suggested trying the reset button. MrAsk found that, looking at the instruction book, and it worked. He also cleared some cotton wrapped around the brushes. So if you have a reset button try that.
have you got warranty left on it if so phone dyson they will prob be able to fix it free of charge, if not you could phone them up anyway and see if they can give help on cost of fixing, if that doesnt help take all the working parts of it as they are usful to have as spares and go buy another one, I wouldnt be without mine had mine for over 10 years and still going strong
If you are resonably handy with motors you can even replace the carbon brushes. That may be all it needs. Pull the motor to bits and check the brushes before ordering though.

thanks for all helpful answers. It's 6-7 years old askyourgran must ask hubby go look for reset button fingers crossed. But it smoked and had smell so guess more than reset.
I've had mine for about 15 years. I take out the filters now and again and bang them against the outside wall to get rid of the dust. It's an absolutely brilliant cleaner.
