Railway Knowledge Needed!

Please can anyone tell me what the attached photo shows? It was taken on the tracks at Birmingham New Street. Also can anyone tell me what the large flat yellow objects are that are sometimes positioned in the middle of the tracks?

The photo is of a grey gridlike object - and I asked ALSO, if anyone knew what the yellow objects are which are often located in similar positions ..... sorry to confuse!

Nothing showing on the Picasa link, but definitely sounds like the AWS. There's loads of safety and monitoring equipment on the tracks, this would be more noticeable than others.
