hotels - tidying the rooms.

just curious to whether others feel the same really

when i stay somewhere, i dont want anyone coming into the room, any more often than say every 3 days or so - ideally not at all until i ask.

i dont need the covers on my bed straightening, i dont need someone going round moving stuff about

one place had placed a set of ceramic whales, right beside the bed- on the window ledge, where i want to put my clock, book, drink etc, so i moved them to the other end, out the way - also so i didnt break them.

every single day she came in put them back where she wanted them... every day moved them back... this was a pretty crazy woman in general though - had a nightmare there - they stole stuff, threw my things away, refused to give me a key etc.

but i assume there are other things similar that go on in other places.

i know some have a system where you let them know if you want new towels or a change of bedding, with a hook on the door or something etc

so what do you think? do you want daily 'faffing', or just be left alone?


i just watched 4 in a bed and apparently they went in the room 2-3 time a day and just straightened their things, lined things up, folded things etc - that would irritate me.

nope, i like my room "seen to" each day.

Straightening the bedding, fresh towels etc. I see that as part of the hotel 'package' (for want of a better word), that i've paid for.

Don't mind them changing the towels, cleaning the bathroom etc, but I always take my toothbrush with me just in case they decide to use it to clean something else!

When my underwear was rearranged in the drawer I was a little bemused...but a daily top up of the sweetie and biscuit basket was an essential...

I usually stay in a holiday apartment where there is no service unless requested. Then you pay extra for the service.

I'm the same as you. Would prefer the cleaner to only go into the room if it needed cleaning. Most of the time, I tend to 'tidy' as I go along, pull up covers, hang towels back up etc., Nothing that's going to eat into holiday time, just to make sure that when we get back to the room at silly o'clock I don't fall over anything!

I think generally I like someone to come in and make the bed and check that the bathroom's clean (not that I ever really leave a hotel room in a mess), but that ceramic whale business is a bit extreme and would have got up my nose as well.

I am the same as you Joko. I prefer my room to be left and only cleaned everything 2 or 3 days. I am quite a tidy person anyway. Hotels should ask customers when they check-in whether they would prefer a daily, two daily etc clean.

I took my 2 daughters to Brighton for a week at Easter and the cleaner came in daily. When we got back each night, their cuddly toys had been put on the girls' pillows and were soundo!

they dont normally give you fresh towels every day though do they?
dont they just fold them for a few days?
one use doesnt warrant a rewash really....
and who needs their bathroom cleaning daily though? what do pople do in them to warrant a proper clean in one day?

you see rowan, thats where id be really peeved... going through my drawers and stuff... no need at all.

much love - yes i think thats right - as clearly people diffrent ideas of whats acceptable and what they want.

they should perhaps have a board by the door or somehting that tells the maid what the occupant wants - like you move a slider to yes if you want them to tidy up, or need new soap etc

I like the room to be 'serviced'.

I usually fold bed covers down to allow the bed to air. It's nice to come back to the room and it's finished airing and been made, fresh towels, replaced any toiletries, topped up the coffee, replaced the cups and glasses, etc.

But it's also nice when they leave your own stuff exactly where it was, so you feel that they haven't touched anything that belongs to you.

yes JJ - there is a line that some seem to cross i think - no problem with them checking/replacing stuff .. going through my stuff?... i think id complain actually.

i think id like a quick look to see if i need more tea etc, check the toilet roll, empty bin etc

they should know how many days ive had the towels and replace every few days - same with the bedding

maybe a full clean every week or something - toilet, hoover etc

but thats about it really

The convention that seems to work everywhere now is that if you want a towel replacing, you throw it in the bath, and if you will use it again, you leave it on the rail.

I agree that the servicing of the room is something I have paid for, and it's one reason why I enjoy hotels.

I like my bath and basin to be foresnically cleaned every day - something I rarely have time for at home. as far as tidying goes, I have no objection to anyone tidying up and putting things neatly. i have never experienced anyone tidying up in drawers, usually just what is visible. Anthying I don't want, cusions etc., I ask to be removed on the first day.

With regard to towels, a lot of hotels adopt the European system - if you leave your towel in the bath they change it, and if you leave it on the rail, they fold it until it's in the bath. You can have your towels changed every day if you wish, but they usually leave a card adivisng of the detergent effluent in the sea, which they are looking to reduce.

It's all a matter of inidivudal tastes, but most hotels adopt the proceedures i have outlined and if I have any issues or requirements, I advise reception - can't expect them to be mind readers about individual guests' wants and needs.

When I`m on holiday the room maid comes in every day but when I`m on a work trip, I don`t allow anyone in the room. I hang the the Do not Disturb sign on the door. I loved the door sign I got from the Sheraton Caracas - it said "No Moleste"

Some hotels have a do not disturb/do not tidy sign on the back of the door, if you used this they would not have come into the room, also with the towels, if you leave them on the floor or lying around the room they will fold them up and put them back for you to use, when you want them changed you put them in the bath. I worked for a top hotel for 7 years and this was the system they had in place and so did most other top hotels all to do with the environmental code and other codes that hotels have to stick to.

Dara O'Briain told a really funny story about how he was doing a show and had time to kill so his female publicist or something let him use her hotel room. When he went in he discovered the staff had taken her pyjamas and made a swan out of them which was now sitting on her pillow - but he was terrified that she would think he had done it while sitting there :-)

I remember having a shower in a wet room in Greece, halfway through my shower the door opened and in strolled the maid, she said excuse me(I think it meant excuse me, I didnt understand a word), emptied the bin and walked out, I just carried on showering and she carried on with what she was doing. I was a little surprised and the wife wasnt too impressed I can tell you!
