Sandy is right. Before the universally used rim-driven dynamos bicycle shops used to sell tins of calcium carbide which when added to water produced acetylene gas to power bike lights. Mischievous lads like me used to put carbide into bottles with water and seal them, run away and watch the bottles explode.
A great way (illegal as all get out) to go fishing here in the U.S., chukka. A quart canning jar (glass) with a few inches of damp sand in the bottom and a goodly handful of calcium carbide thrown in, screw lid on tight (and fast) throw it in the middle of the pond... after the explosion, row boat around picking up stunned fish...
The unit was called a Dynamo, it was a barrel type with a rotating wheel at the top the rotated with the tyre, in turn generated electricity for the lights front and rear.
