Electrics Question

I have a chicken brooder lamp and shade which I want to use over a reptile enclosure. The specs on the lamp say 230V - 50/60Hz -250W max -then under EU is stamped IPX4. The cable looks quite heavy duty and has a two round pin plug at the end - would it be safe to use if I can find an adapter that goes from two pin (round) to three pin (square) - I want to use it in a spare room in the house. A standard shaver a adapter (a pound or two from almost any discount store) would probably do the job perfectly well (and safely).

Hang on! I didn't mean to click 'Submit' there!!!! (In fact, I'm almost sure that I didn't!).

I was going on to say that that you'd need to be careful about the actual power of the bulb in the lamp as a 250W bulb draws around 1 Amp and shaver adapters are usually fused for that current. e.g.:

Personally I'd just buy a shaver adapter that has access to the fuse and put a 3 Amp one instead of the one that comes with it, but it might be better (and far more likely to satisfy the regulation-bound electricians around here) if you were to remove the existing plug and replace it with a standard UK one (but fused at 3A, not 13A)

Thank you Buenchico - I'll digest that info - the actual wattage won't exceed 150 watts on the brooder lamp (because it's better to have have several lamps of a lower wattage than one high wattage on).

Swap the plug to a standard 3pin.If the lamps are son or hqi dont use any other wattage ..lower or higher..than the ballast rating or they may fail...(quite spectacular to see!)

I agree with Bright Spark, it is spectacular when high powered control gear goes bang!!!!!!
