My Laptop Keeps Switching Off

Overheating is, as has been suggested, probably the most common cause of the problem. Check that the vents aren't obstructed and that you can hear the fan running inside it.

If everything seems to be OK, it's possible that the laptop has suffered a slight knock, breaking the thermal bond between the processor and its heat sink. It's a simple job for a computer technician to sort that out but I wouldn't recommend trying it yourself, as simply getting inside a laptop (without breaking something along the way) can be a rather tricky job.

dell inspiron 1545....fans running, i can hear it. Battery not hot. Windows vista (7) no error messages. They will no doubt rip me off like the guy trying to sell me a battery for £75, when the cheapest on ebay was £10.98. frustrated. Now my Polly has gone broke my dongle by pulling the laptop off settee..and dropping the whole thing in an awkward position. dongle fell apart and broke...not my day.

Oh phleb, poor you. Everything seems to be going wrong at the moment. I hope you get it all ok soon. I had a similar problem with my old laptop . It was nearly 8 years old . I got a new one and hey presto, problem solved. I'm sure they have a limited life span. My old one is now a museum piece!!

I can't afford a new one. I am behind with my household bills and since i have stopped working everything has been going wrong financially. I want to go back to work, but feel so guilty about Polly. What a crap start to the new year. However, i do have a feeling this year will be much better than the last. xx

It's possible your Power Options have altered for some reason.
From your desktop click the bottom left hand Windows logo, then click 'Control Panel' and go to 'Power Options'. Have a search around to see when and if the laptop times to switch off have become too short. You can increase the times for Log-off, sleep, turn off, from these options.
