I have bought one of those plug in gadgets which deter mice etc.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00T3HGR0I?keywords=home%20guard%205%20in%201-%20advanced%20home%20pest%20control%20equipment&qid=1444749458&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

Had it about 3 weeks and have noticed I seem to be using more electricity than normal, could this be the cause?

I doubt it- we use one and I haven't noticed any difference.
I read they don't work (unless you throw them at the mouse) but my OH swears by it and to be fair since we got it we haven't seen a mouse in 5 years

I did not think it could be that but only happening since got it...could be a coincidence and just been using the oven more..I looked at several of the gadgets and one I chose has very good reports.I have it in the garage.Hope it does work!!!

Somewhere on the item or the packaging should be a label with details of power usage, you want wattage (eg 50W)
compare wattage figure with light bulb of similar power for cost
I have one too since I seen a grey rat in my yard. Hopefully it is has (rat) gone - the only thing my friend who simply must have most fantastic hearing - says the squeaky noise puts her head away so I have to turn it off for her. Other friends never pass a remark. I don't think they use much.

When I read the info about my new fire which has two bulbs burning - it said they burn 5p a day (the price of a plastic bag LOL) couldn't resist that.

Thank you Baldric, will take a look...Jenny,like you little joke!!
I would hope next to nothing. It's only pushing out sound, and you know how long you can run a battery radio for, doing that.

If you are using noticeably more power of late then I'd look for a change in your behaviour this time of year to account for it, were I you.
They are useless, I had one and came into the room to see a mouse actually sitting on top of it while it was running.
Even if it did work it is only going to make the mice move a short distance, like into the house!
Old fashioned traps or poison are the only things that work, unless you get a cat.
