How do I go about this? People have told me to mail a dated letter to myself wherein I claim sole right to the word but this sounds a bit corny. Is there another way?

Names, single words or even short phrases cannot be copyrighted. They can, however, be used as trade marks for goods or services.
There is something along these lines - but I can't remember exactly whether it's copyright or not. But what you do is send yourself a registered or recorded letter (that way you can prove when it was sent/received) and keep it safe without EVER opening it. The only time it would be opened would be in court and that would be your proof.
