I've actually now handed the problem over to the management company as I've had enough. They are sending a specialist drainage firm out to investigate and repair or report back on their findings. I'm now waiting for their phone call.
So thanks everyone, we'll see what happens now.

Ladybirder, I've been reading through all the responses so far, but I'm sad to say that I have nothing to suggest. Yes, I can think of plenty of possible causes for your ongoing gurgling, and now your water system problem.
The trouble is, with these issues, you just have to be there . Though I see even two plumbers are baffled by this.
If only I could be there to poke about a bit and see for myself. Same goes for all of us on AB.
At least you're about to get more opinion. Often, a fresh head can spot a problem.
Do let us know what they have to say.
I've been re-reading your original thread. I think that was way back in April. For what it's worth, I haven't forgotten about you.

LB... putting your gurgling aside for a moment... the water shut-off problem...
You describe a modern Quarter-turn valve. 90 degrees between on and off. Yet, it has no effect on your kitchen cold tap?
Might I ever so politely suggest that you may be operating the wrong valve? ;o)
Are you perhaps turning the valve that isolates the supply to dishwasher/washing machine/water softener or something similar?
Perhaps you're missing the rising main stopcock completely?

Sorry everyone who has posted since I cleared off, thoroughly fed up, I've only just noticed the newer posts.
I'm still waiting for the aforementioned phone call and have emailed them with the latest news.
If anyone is still interested the latest news is that this morning I have noticed mouldy water marks on my hall wall just above the skirting board. My bath is the other side of that wall but at the opposite end to the gurgling noise. I had a plumber remove the side of the bath in March to check for water underneath but there wasn't any sign of any at all. Just gets worse. Sigh, I could cry.
