This is probably a silly question, but do you need to plug a freeview box into a tv aerial socket?

Yes. The aerial cable that plugs into the wall (usually) to connect to the rooftop aerial plugs into the back of the freeview box instead of into the back of the TV.

If you are still not getting a picture you might have to upgrade your aerial, It needs better reception than for anologue.

Or if you are getting a picture of sorts, you can always try a signal booster which you can get from a DIY store. I have one and the picture is great.
