Can anybody tell me why during BB the sound goes off intermittently, and we have to listen to those annoying little bits of either music, birdsong, or silence. I'm not a fan or regular viewer of BB, but I don't know why they do it. Is there some sort of legal clause in the rules???

yeah, legal issues. If they start talking about contentious issues/ other people/ singing, they mute the sound so they don't get sued

Thanks for that. I thought i had to be something like that. Cheers!!
why such annoying sounds though.why not just silence
Also sometimes what they do is that if people are talking about stuff that the viewers might actually want to hear the BB bosses dub it out so you have to check out the Big Brother programme on Channel 4 to find out what they were saying.
will there be more turning the sound off coz there's a tourets syndrome suferer? or will they leave the swearing in? i don't watch it personally but the lads down the pub were having a laugh.

Thats why I never watch it 'live' theres more 'silent moments' than actual talking!

Funniest thing...........Davina saying to the housemates "You're live on Channel Four, please do not swear" and there's somebody with Tourettes in there!
