If I remember correctly, the alarm manufacturers are not too careful about what frequency they use in the keyfob. Again, if I remember correctly, the frequencies used are very near those allocated to some mobile phone companies.
So, if you are near a mobile mast, the power of the mast is greater than your alarm keyfob, so "masks" the signal you're trying to transmit to your car.

Is your friends house on a hill? Certain car alarms won't activate if they are at an angle. This auto deactivation is to make sure that the alarm doesn't go off constantly when cars get towed by a winch truck.
As for mobile phone masts affecting your fob, it's unlikely. Mobile phones work on 900/1800 Feq which is UHF and car alarm fobs work on HF.
