car show fifth gear gives out cars as competition prizes - does the show (and any other prize showin general) buy the prizes themselves or are they given by the manufacturers -if it is the manufacturers - what do they gain - brief publicity apart?

Your last line gives the answer...cheap publicity. As with all tv prize give aways, the manufacturers gain a lot of publicity often for less than a 30 second commercial.
I've often wondered this but I just put it down to Fifth Gear buying the car (probably at a discount or something) and with the 1 an entry charge to call or text, they're probably going to have more entries than the car's value.

im certain that fifth gear employ someone to find the 2nd hand cars and the new ones seem to be genuine too as they are the winners of the weeks shoot-out.

i would imagine that,at worst, they break even on a competition.

As with a lot of shows now on tv the 1 entry for the competitions pays for the prize and with so many people entering it probably pays for the production of the show aswell!
I keep entering the fifth gear competitions which is a bit of fun for 1. I would though like to see where they state who has actually won the prize each week. Does anyone know?
