The easy way to work out VAT at 17.5 per cent is to take 10 per cent of the amount, in this case �40.70, halve it, �20.35 and halve again, �10.18 then add all three together - �71.23 (if I've got my sums right!).
The beauty of my way Loosehead is that you don't need a calculator. You are just taking 10 per cent, halving it (for 5 per cent) and then halving that for the 2 1/2 per cent. Simple!
