Old song

When I was little my nan used to sing a song to me, and I can remember it was about a grandfather clock. I know the end bit was 'and it stopped, short, never to go again when the old man died' Does anyone know what it is called and the rest of the words?

mine too, my mother used to sing it to us when we were kids. it's nice to remember how young we all once were' isn't it.

That's brought some lovely memories back of my grandad singing that to me :o) Strangely enough, he had a postman's clock which I doubt has been wound up since he passed on.

OBonio my watch stopped when my grandad died. I left it for years and have only recently bought a new battery

We used to sing this in my secondary school. I remember our teacher telling us that the song is based on a grandfather clock owned by two brothers. The clock started loosing time when the older brother died, and when the younger brother died, it stopped altogether.

The song was recorded by the Radio Revellers back in the late 1940s/early 1950s. If you heard it on the radio, this was probably the version you remember.

It was issued on a Decca 78 originally, but I know it's been reissued on several compilation albums (I believe one of them is called Junior Choice)
