I've just moved to Spain. Will my normal UK handset work on the Spanish phone system? I don't want to plug it in yet in case it screws something up. Thanks

I am pretty certain that all telephone systems throughout the EU and the EEA too are entirely compatible. In any case the voltage used in these systems is the same more or less around the world, to the best of my knowledge. In the past, BT used to make much of only "allowing" approved instruments to be connected to the UK system but this had as much to do with monopolistic practices as anything else. A set which has been used in the UK is not likely to be seriously sub-standard but because the UK has a unique plug and socket system, I believe, you will only be able to connect it if you somehow achieve a connection such as by fitting a spanish plug - unless you have an RJ45 (US type) plug on it and have an adaptor to the spanish system.
