How does one become a motorcycle courier? Are there reputable agencies for this? Are there any opportunities outside of London?

There are a number of agencies - best to find some numbers via Yellow Pages and enquire about rates and duties. You are unlikely to find much of demand outside London - the culture of bike courriers porbably doesn't extend outside the M25 because the vast numbers of letters and packages ferried short distances within the city boundary makes the concept ecconomical and viable in london, less so outside the city area.
Sorry to contradict you andy but there are quite a few couriers on the streets of Glasgow and with Edinburgh being relatively close but the traffic being horrif at times the motorcyclist seems to be the method of choice.

Obviously you have to have a full clean bike licence, if you don't have one get it quick as they are changing the test parameters soon and making it harder, other than that you will be best served by sending some spec letters out to companies asking if they need riders and to put you on their books.

Best place to look is in the weekly motorcycle news paper MCN. This has a classifieds section which has loads of bike courier jobs. Most want experience but I'm sure for a slightly reduced rate you could get a job.
I am happy to stand corrected by my learned friend - it appears that major cities are the only areas where the concept of courriers works, but hopefully the combinmed advice of muh colleagues will asssist.
