most vehicles nowadays tell you the outside temperature but where exactly is the thermometer positioned to give accurate readings

The sensor is often mounted behind the front bumper to eliminate wind chill but also not be affected by heat from the engine.
It can be found behind the bumper of some cars as far as i know, look in the haynes manual for a car with a thermometer and it should tell you where it is.
On my old Jag it was inside the radio aerial.
