when the dishwasher runs, is it like i think, and it pulls in cold water, heats it up in the bottom, pings the tablet in then uses that water to fling round the machine, or like hubby thinks, the water goes through the drawer with the tablet in and disolves it? Or something different?

The spring loaded flap is released and it pops open with a dull clunk. This allows the tablet to drop into the water at the correct time.

Perhaps you could ask your husband to point out the drawer. I suspect he will walk up to the washing machine!
It should be obvious. If you open the machine at the end of its cycle, and the tablet compartment is open, then its like Panic Button says. If the compartment is still shut, then it's like your hubby says.
