electric bill usage readings query

i have now been informed by my electric company that my billing has been calculated the wrong way round.in english this means that since 2006 my night time electricity has been charged at day rate and daytime reading been charged at night rate.so in fact i will be owing a lot of money i think.what i want to know is what are my rights in this case.they are curently working out the costs but surely i must have some rights here in rageards to estimates and readings the electric company have used.
i thought i read somewhere that anything over a year old cannot be claimed back.please if there is someone who has some advise on our rights,i would like to hear.at the moment i am really worried.we are currently paying �30monthly we dont have a tumble dryer or anything that uses excess electricity.there are 2 people in this 3bedroom house.we do cook by electric

Point out that clearly if you are at fault, you will pay. Tell them you look forward to the result of their investigation in to whose fault the billing error was.
The electricity company are the ones who should be worried about getting paid (due to their c0ck-up), not you.

Hang on chaps - there is something very wrong here.
Night use electricity uses large numbers of units at a cheap rate.
Day use electricity uses few units at expensive rate.
Therefore it stands to reason you must be OWED a huge sum - not you owe them.

I don't see how the electricity company can try to get the money. It is their error and you paid the price they asked.
If you went into a supermarket and bought a tin of beans for 50p and then after you had paid and left they said it should have been 75p. Most people would say tough, it's your error I am not paying any more.
I feel that the same principle applies here.
Tell them tough. You have honoured your side of the bargain by paying what was asked. Also tell them that you intend to change supplier and contact the energy ombudsman if they continue to harass you.
Furthermore tell them that they had better not give you a poor credit rating over this either as you have paid all that you were asked to pay to them.
Do all of this in writing and keep copies. That is very important.
Citizens advice can be very helpful.
Remember THEY are in the wrong. NOT YOU!

Eence, you are right in thinking that there is code of practice which sets out standradrs of how energy companies shold behave. This does include that they should not back bill beyond a year in the case of a billing error. However not all energy companies have signed up to it, so you'll need to have a look ath their wesite to see if your one does.
Also, would strongly advise that you contact energy watch, the independant regualtor. They have a website where you can make a query whith the details of your problem, and they can give you advise as to what should and shouldnt be allowed. They can also help you fight if you wish them to, and they thnk there is an issue. You usually find that geting energy watch involved makes the companies a whole lot more co-operative!

thanks for all the interest in this post.if it had not been for the credit crunch i would not have checked all.but after all that the people at eon have said and i quote'as a goodwill gesture they will take it back 1 year only but i think that they did the meter readings right from 2006 and in that time till now the only meter readings that have come from my own readings have been used twice and that was this year.i personally think that they should scrap all the debt incurred here because its their fault.i have been in touch with citizens advice and i have told eon that on their return answer to all this i will be contacting my solicitor.i am seriously considering changing my supplier after all this.
i have been in touch with consumer direct and apparently i have to pay going back 1 year and by law i must be given 1 year to pay.i have used the electric and it has to be paid for,putting it bluntly.thanks for all the answers on this post.will keep all posted on the outcome of all this. this is the last time i check on anything to save money cos this time is gonna cost me more???
Why is an economy 7 meter fitted.
The off peak tariffs were introduced many years ago because the electricity companies realised they without cheap off prices they could never sell any heating appliances.
You need to get this meter replaced.
Make sure the back billing is to your advantage.
It all needs rebilling on a standard domestic tariff, at the rates applicable.

this is a council property and i have to have the meter which i am provided with but this meter is fairy new ie within last 8 years.
i am dreading this bill. i know i will be given time to pay but hate owing money especially when not benefitting from it ie a nice holiday expenditure???
surely there should be something to protect people from this sort of thing happening?

Until recently they could go back 6 or 7 years.
Bit of a bummer but the rule was, you have to pay for what you use.
Make them work for it, get copies of all bills sent. and an exact breakdown of what they consider you owe.
Offer them 50% in cash, it will be better for them to accept that than manually collect it over 1 year.
At the moment no bill exists for what they want to claim.
They dont like raising debts so I bet tnhey will take a reasonable offer to clear it up.
They are now judged on customer performance and dont like disputes.

Has the council at some time changed the heating system to gas from storage heaters, ask the neighbours etc.
They should in that case have sorted out the metering with the leccy supplier.
Do not take any bullsh1t off them.
Having worked in disputes for 30 years I know they currently take the easy way out, still complying with the regs of course.
It is entirely up to them how they re-bll, ie at half price.
Believe me they do not want the hassle.
