HI THERE , i need some help to write a letter . I am very emotional and depressed and i need time offwork as of tomorrow i am going to ring in work to tell the duty manager i will not be in and say its personnal and i want to write a letter to the personnal manager to explain but havent got a clue what to write . ive got a lot of things that have just built up inside me and im really down and i hate going in work being so miserable . pplmay think im ok but deep down im not and ive had a good old cry with my hubby tonite there family problems as well ding dongs with my mum over my neice and everything is just a big mess and i need sum time to clear my head but whe i return to work i have to sit in a room with 2 managers which one ask questions while the other takes note and i dont want to do this as i know i will just break down please can sumone help me with a letter to explain all and so i dont sound silly thank you

Well I would start by apologising for not coming into work.
Then you could say that you are feeling unwell and suspect you are depressed, that you have been finiding it increasingly difficult to function properly at work.
You will be consulting a doctor imminently (you should do this) and will be following his/her advice on teh fastest way to getting back to normal.
You would appreciate their support during this time and are confident that with time and treatment you can make a full recovery and return to work all cylinders firing. You will be back in touch as soon as you have been to the doctors.

Work will probably (should) want to know whether your state of mind has anything to do with the work environment - depending on your circumstance you may want to say that it isnt a result of anything happening at work.

On the return to work youre perfectly entitled to have some moral support so take someone in, dont worry about blubbing - its a natural emotional outlet and if the personnel manager is a man it'll shorten the interview as they never know what to say to women crying lol.

Hope you feel better soon- get down the doctors.

first of all i wouldlike to appoligise for not being in work . i am feeling unwell and suspect i have a littledepression i have ben finding it difficult to function in work butwould like to reasure you this has nothing to do with work . i need to get my head round a few things and i hope you can supportme on this
i am very emotional at the moment and there hadbeen alot of things which have happened in the last 12 months from fertility problems , family and social issuses ------( is that the right word as im due to appear in court as aeye witness but behind a screen didnt like to say court ?
which has just built up inside me and now is the time for me to sort this out . ?? what next

the only thing im dreading and i mean dreading and i will get my self all worked up about is going back and sitting down like a skool kid and saying everything cause i know ill end up in tears this is why i will end up going to work tomorow and just carry on hiding it

is social issues the right word i used in the letter above ??
Oh dear, sounds like you are having a tough time.

I dont think you need to go into all of that in your letter - you are allowed some privacy!

How about saying there have been a number of personal issues beyond your control which have accumulated and are leading you to now take some constructive action which unfortunately means you will need a few days off.

I know you maynt want to but you really could ask the doctor to prescribe something that will make you feel a bit stronger and together, and then the return to work interview wont be such a trauma.

ANd like I said, take someone in for moral support so you dont feel so alone. And I dont see why you cant ask for it to be postponed a week when you get back so youre ready. But try not to worry about that yet - going into work is not successfully distracting you from whats going on in your life so its time for another strategy. You dont want to carry on feeling like this.
Go to your doctors and ask him to sign you off for a week or so.

Your company dont need to know the exact details.

I too have suffered from depression and find that as soon as you tell people they behave diferently towards you, so be careful how many people you tell.
I agree with VHG. I am in a similar position and absolutely did not want to be telling my employer the ins and outs of what's going on. I went to the doctor and she has signed me off work citing stress and mild depression. Your employer won't ask too many questions if you do that.
I agree that you don't need to tell your company the reasons for your absence. I would just phone them and tell them you are sick and are going to the GP and then forward a medical certificate. I am sure your GP will give you one for a few weeks.

Even when you return to work for that dreaded interview (I know what that feels like) you don't have to disclose the reason for your depression. The words 'Personal Issues' will suffice. You need not get into any discussions about the nature of these issues and they should understand and respect this.

i work for tesco and they like to know everything and dont respect anything ! thank you though xx

".........Dear Sir, due to unforseen domestic pressures I am unable to work at present. I apologise for the inconvenience this will cause you and hope to return to work soon. I appreciate your understanding, Yours sincerely ..........."

that should do it?
Tesco don't have any rights to question you on personal issues and you shouldn't feel pressurised into telling them. All they have to know is that your are too ill to work. A doctor's certificate will tell them the reason.

If you have to write a letter follow terambulan's advice and keep it short and sweet.

As long as you have a doctor's certificate any meetings after your return should be primarily concerned with how they can help ease you back into work. Please don't worry about it.

I'm not going to the doctors ive got my family and close friends to talk too it's only 3 days this week at work which is classed as flexi over time im not contracted then as of friday im on holiday , if i go to the doctor and they sign me off for a week or so it will mess my holiday pay up and wont get paid sick pay . i cant afford to do that . so i will loose 3 days pay then take my holiday and get paid for that and return a week monday which my head should be alot clearer hopefully !!!
From Experiance if you are suffering with depression it is far deeper than just feeling off it for a few days, Go and see your doctor, tell him/her how you feel and tell them you need a bit of time to gather your thoughts due to pressures of this and that ,

Stress at home and at work is serious and is hard to shake off without help if it becomes out of hand , Just keep your employers fully informed , tell them the basics and no more, Just send in the doctors note and keep them informed and get better in your own time ...

Ask for a medical certificate first before sending a letter so that you will have an evidence that you are not feeling well.
