I'm definitely not good with computers and don't really understand all the technical jargon so bear with me please. I've received an email with two attachments from a trusted source. The first one I opened with no problem (Adobe) however the second gave me a message saying 'This file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action.' Create an association in the folders option. Now I took this to mean Adobe wasn't able to open this. So, went into folders options and am given 4 tabs to choose from. General ,view, file types and offline files. Can't work out what I'm to do - please can someone explain (treat me like the idiot I am and assume I know absolutely nothing. Many thanks

What is the file extension for this attached file? The bit after the "." ?

The one that adobe opened was probably "pdf".
Can you see what three letters follow the name of the attachment?

eg file1.wps
what type of file is it?
in the name of the file is a clue, save the attachment on your desktop or whatever and copy the file name including what is after the dot

eg. picture.gif
or table.xls

what is after the dot?
You wait for one, and three come together....
haha Ethel, like buses
Didn't have to wait as long as you do for a bus!

it is possible you cannot see a file extension--if so go to folder options then view and scroll down until you see "hide extensions for known file types"--remove the tick from the little box beside that then click apply--you should now be able to see the file type--cheers

thanks for all the replies and have tried all suggestions - the 1st attachment is exactly how Rollo describles "pdf" - it had the Adobe logo with it and was no probs. The second one is completely different - a white square with grey surround - top left corner turned in and a little T V screen like thing inside is a stripe across the top below this a red shape (left hand side )and a different blue shape (right han side) followed by untitled-square brackets with 1.2 inside then (6.03KB) - have also followed ajmmac's suggestion and still no luck. Looks like the old folks home for me tomorrow.
carmalee - did you save the file on the desktop or someplace else? might be able to talk you through it lol
Question Author
Haven't saved it anywhere - its still as an unopened attachment in OE

just so you know - live right out in the sticks and have been having power cuts all night so if I don't reply, am not ungrateful, just unable to! thanks so much
I am at a complete loss.

Is it possible to ask the sender what program was used to create the attachment?
can you save it someplace just now? before it powers off again ?
Question Author
Weel and Ethel - will do and thanks so much - don't abandon me!
Question Author
think the answer may be is to get in touch with the sender. Have tried to 'save' this attachment as suggested - getting nowhere which is very strange. obviously something is amiss - will try and keep you updated. Am very appreciative of the help - go well
how do you bring your email in, do you use Outlook or log onto the web page to get it?
If you use Outlook:
Open the email, select File, Save Attachments, then choose desktop for example.

If you get your mail on the web:
In Hotmail it normally shows the whole name of the attachment - no need to save.
Also when you try to open it does it give you the option to save and not open?
great advice above and don't wish to jump in late, but, if you can see the attachments icon just right click on the icon and select properties if it's an option.

if so what can you see?

hi chuck, we will be here for a while lol

Bed time for me tho, will look in 2moro by which time you will have sorted it out no doubt
Question Author
weeal - have done all that and still nothing happens - really don't think its me being dumb - I've had so much help from obvious experts and have followed instructions to a T - will contact the sender. Stay well and thanks
