To be on the safe side, try taking it to your local computer repair outlet, most towns have one. Otherwise try scandisk (a program on your computer) under accessories + system tools and specify 'A' Drive if it's a floppy. It might work.
Do you mean the actual disk or the drive? If its the disk then try it in another computer. But, its nearly impossible to retrieve the data off a knackered diskette...

If it is the computer's internam hard disk that has developed a fault then the computer may not boot correctly, or having done so will crash or even, in som instances that I have experienced, seem to work ok , but not save stuff properly when you ask it to. The best cure if this happens, is not to try using it at all, as this may very well cause more corruption, but take it to a data recovery expert and pay for the data to be recoverd.

You normally just need to take or send the hard disk and, depending on the depth of recovery required and the size of the files they will charge you accordingly. Most data recovery firms seem to be able to get between 80 and 100% of stuff back provided it has not been stamped on and further corrupted by amateur attempts at reformating etc.

Here are a few UK companies (in no particular order) that wil do this for you.
