Different telephone socket

Hi,
I wonder if anyone on here can help - my friend has recently moved into a new house and two of the telephone sockets are normal BT sockets but the main one in the living room seems to be smaller than the others and a normal phone will not plug into it - it has the BT logo on it so I don't think it's anything "dodgy"!!
Has anybody any idea why this might be or where we could get some sort of adaptor so that it can be used?

Perhaps it is for a broadband cable for a computer.

It could be for broadband, as Hopkirk states, but it could simply be a European socket. Here in Ireland the sockets are a little smaller so if using a British phone an adaptor is needed - freely available in most shops that sell phones incl tesco.

I just changed the telephone wire to the European one, and worked fine on all British phones!

just to clarify - the wiring is exactly the same - it's the socket size that changes here

Thanks for your answers - I think it may be that it is a European socket - I'll have a look for an adaptor.

You can get adaptors, but easier just to get a cable with the small plugs on each end.

Is it possible that the previous tenant was disabled in some way and the small socket is for an indicator to let them know that the phone is ringing in the other room??
Just a thought!
