We had a larger than usual bill for 1 gas quarter this year. We then discovered that we had left a strong magnet near the gas meter. Could this have affected the meter?

You 'discovered' ?

More like you were trying to slow it down.

Magnets can affect old mechaical meters but not electronic ones. But I though that magnets slowed down the meter leading to under recording rather than over recording. Some meters can detect attempted tampering via magnets.
How did a magnet come to be near the meter?
