Atmospheres

Not sure if I'm in the right place but here goes. Last night in the pub (don't these things always start in pub) somebody mentioned that their wrist watch was waterproof to " 3 atmospheres " but nobody knew what depth this actually was. Does anybody know?

I think, or it might be 300. Well it's the depth at which pressure is three times as much as it is on the surface.

Pressure increases by one atm every 10 metres or 33 feet depth
So 2 atm at 33ft, 3 atm at 66ft etc

The thing is.....why would you actually need a watch that will work deep under the sea?
Why would you need a watch anyway?

Wouldn't you think that normal atmospheric pressure, at sea level (on the surface) would be 1 atm?

So if, as a simple guide, you are going to work in 10m increments, then ...

On the surface ... 1 atm.

At 10m ... 2 atm.

At 20m ... 3 atm.

Jayne, it would probably be the wettest it ever got, the guy who'se owns the watch in question won't even go in his grandkids paddling pool, let alone diving to 100ft

Actually, if the watch was intended for use in water, the depth tolerance would probably have been indicated in ms.

There is a difference in depths for an atm. between salt and fresh water. I forget what it is, and too lazy to Google it:)
