there is also the public liability aspect too, with horses, they can cause accidents or damage and there may be legal claims against the owner, dogs can also cause injury or damage that could result in legal action for compensation. then there's budgies, they go missing, it helps with the search launch and it's worse with a parrot, they all look alike.
So above we have dozens of stories from folks who wouldn't be without their pooch insurance, and have claimed zillions when Rover fell ill.
Get real. For all you people who have had payouts greater than pay-ins, there has to be hundreds who pay in far more than get back - otherwise the insurer is out of pocket (and that just doesn't happen). Just one person above concluded this.
The 'benefit', which is what the OP asked, is peace of mind - if you can afford it. Otherwise you pay as you go and made decisions (sometimes albeit difficult decisions) about what to do as illnesses / accidents occur.

Yes, I appreciate that, FF.
All I am saying is don't be fooled by a long list of people who say "you've got to be daft not to do this as, in the long run, you'll gain".
Motor insurance (3rd party) for the private individual is compulsory - not the same for pets. Government Institutions can self-insure motor insurance, if they wish and the MOD (for one) used to do so. They pay the claims as they occur.
Its now over 20 years since my dentist went private, or one had to leave the practice. I chose to stay, and was offered (from memory) insurance cover at £20pm, which I rejected. It included 'free' (sic) 6-month check-ups, hygienist and cover for fillings. Even nowadays I pay less than £100 per year for this on PAYG, and I've had about 3 refillings in about 20 years.
Insurance is fine if you go into it with your eyes-open and avoid the scare stories.

I've never had pet insurance as quite frankly it wasn't really the done thing until about 10 years ago. I've been interested in the replies (as I have a new kitten) because I thought the tables were turning a bit and it's now considered by some to have priced itself out of the market and you pay more in than you get out unless you are unlucky with your pet's health - I suppose that's the whole crux of insurance.
What makes me really really angry though is the prices that vets charge nowadays - milking off the insurance no doubt. When people are put in the predicament of what to do best for their pets when money is the deciding factor is not the purpose of a caring profession.
And just to add to Builders the MOD do still self insure and pay the claims as they happen - and boy do the car rental people know it!
