the guy who rang today said that as the repair bill would be more than 66% of the cars value, they won't be repairing it and so i can collect it tomorrow and they will pay me the value of the car. I never thought to ask him whether i am still insured to drive my car and whether they are still covering me for it fully comp, i'll ring in the morning but it's bothering me now.

The insurance will still be valid, it does not stop just because you have had a claim.
If the car is still drivable ( is this the one with the split bumper?) you can just get it 'patched up' as long as it is not dangerous and keep driving.
The same thing happened to a mate of mine. His car was hit from behind while he was stationary at a junction, the insurance wrote it off and sold it back to him for £50. It was an estate car and the only damage was to the tail gate ( they still wrote it off) he went to the scrap yard and bought another tail gate for £50 and fitted it. Car was just as good as before the crash but he was £800 better off. Passed the next MOT no problem as well.
Many policies are terminated by a 'total loss' (write off) payment. You need to check with your insurer.

they're not writing it off at all I know that as they said I could get it fixed myself. I'll ring first thing to check what's going on. thanks
I think you need to check with your insurer.
If they're saying it's not economically viable to repair it (even though it is repairable), they'll prob write it off with a category C or D.

My insurance company did the same thing. I bought the car back and got a friend (a proper mechanic with his own garage) to repair the car. Someone came out to inspect the car to make sure it had been repaired properly, etc ...... saved myself a bit of dosh :)
you've done ok normally they'd deduct the scrap value, the car is written off though, cat C or D. Yes you are still insured.
I was once given a cheque in lieu of repairs to a car.
DJ they HAVE written it off, that's what they mean by it would cost more than 66% of the value. But in your case they will let you buy it back and get it repared yourself.
