That does sound odd. Your occupation will be taken into account when deciding on the premium as some occupations are considered more high risk than others. I've never heard of insurance being cancelled as you are unemployed & didnt tell them. although sometimes when you take out insurance online it might ask how many hours you work, so if it still said 35 hours a week for instance, or whatever you put in last time, I guess they could say you hadn't been honest. It seems harsh though. Check with them again & ask for confirmation in writing of the reason why. As for the claim. If the insurers of the other party have accepted liability then you will claim for the cost of your repairs from them & not on your own policy, so your policy being cancelled wont affect the claim. When you take out a new policy though you will need to declare the claim & that you've had a policy cancelled.
