Car insurance in Canada

I'm going to Nova Scotia this year and plan to hire a car
or borrow one from a friend whilst we are there.
Do I need to inform either my car or travel insurance
companies about this.

No, because you're not taking your car with you. You will have insurance with the hire company. Enjoy your holiday Nova Scotia is lovely, my daughter live there.
