Seeking Role within IT Project management.
4 Answers
I've been out of the loop for a while now - 2/3 years, however, I'm seeking to 'get back' into a project management environment. I have 18 or so years experience within the IT industry, ( VMS, UNIX SQL NT Oracle Rdb, thin client role outs etc...) roles ranging from sales, account mgt, project mgt and general mgt. Are there any good guys out there who can help/advise? I have been talking to several agencies, but seem to be a bit of a waste of time, much prefer to deal with decision makers or those in a current role as opposed to a third party, I hence I'm now networking to feel my way back. If anyone can help is there any way we could communicate direct rather than using this 'third party' medium???

Thanks for your response., are you currently active within PM roles ? Sensible agencies would be useful - if you know any. Additionally any PM roles you know of or assist roles that are available. Hints & tips also useful, as technology does move on, even over 2-3 years. I'm an infrastructure oriented get 'things done' type of person, commercial/technical background. I do have a CV which is on various job boards, but the time of year not good, Xmas coming etc..
If you have any suggestions, help or know of any roles available on the grapevine, much appreciated.

OK - I work in project management of sorts.
Must admit I don't know any agencies that specialise in PM roles, or any roles that are available, so not much use to you there.
What I can tell you however is that PM is moving away from where it used to be in terms of technical skill is becoming less important. What employers seem to be looking for is people with people skills - good communication, organisation, enery, drive and an holistic view.
Does your CV highlight points where you can demonstrate this, or does it make you appear to be very 'task' orientated? (i.e. infrastructure orientated 'get things done' type of person).
With this in mind, the fact that you've been out of the loop for a little while could be seen as a strength in a true project management role - no strong bias towards one aspect of the project or another - and remember technical skill can be learned - developing the right people skills is often much harder.
Lots of luck
