I have a son in the sixth form. My husband lost his job May 2009 and has not worked since. Unfortunately the EMA is based on his tax return 2008/2009 which is above the £30,000 limit. Would my son be eligible for EMA?
Surely it's the young person that gets the EMA in any case - based on the household income, unfortunately. That's the loop you have already been through - looks like the answer is no, unfortunately - because the application is based upon income in the previous FY.
Try phoning the administrators of the system - there might be a let out in your circumstances (greatly reduced income in the current year).http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAn

Thanks. I have tried almost every single website imaginable, but can't seem to get a straight answer. I rang and spoke to someone who didn't seem to know what day it was let alone anything else! I shall keep trying though.
