Walk! If thats how you feel, just do it. There's no better feeling. Then go find another job but be prepared to do anything - I have done this twice and signed up with an agency washing up, cleaning, doing anything to bring in money till I got another proper job. No-one should have to stay in a job if they hate it or are being treated like broccoli.

Depending on why you are walking it could make for issues getting other interviews or jobs if you could come across as unreliable, especially if there is a reference issue. Is there a good explainable reason that another employer is likely to understand? Maybe partly depends on the kind of jobs you are going for unless you already have one hence why you want to walk.
"You won't get dole for six weeks." this is not correct. If a person leaves employment voluntarily or is dimissed for misconduct, Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) can be sanctioned (stopped) for up to twenty-six weeks. For leaving voluntarily, unless the person shows what is called "just cause" for doing so, a sanction will be imposed..
"I thought that an employer's reference was able to sing your praises, but not allowed to *** you off"
I'm not sure where or when this misconception came about. So long as the reference is accurate (and can be backed up by documentary evidence if necessary) then the employer can give whatever kind of reference he or she likes.
Can't see why you'd want to 'walk out' of a job. Work your legal notice, it's only a week, and it will save any problems now or in the future.

My question is WHY do you want to walk out of your job, what is it you are not enjoying? Dont cut your nose off to spite your face, unless you have another job lined up or are that well off you can choose what work you do, then try and stick it out...many of us would like to just walk out of our jobs but sadly it is not the climate to do so for the forseeable future.
