I've seen these jobs posted online, and I wondered what a medical writer has to do - is it a question of a good knowledge of medical terminology?

I would proceed with care as it sounds like the sort of thing that could be a scam.
There do seem to be lots though if you Google the term, particularly in USA

I'm not thinking about doing it myself, I was just interested to find out if anyone knows anything about it - I've seen a few requests for medical writers on genuine job websites, I don't think that it is a scam.

Looks highly technical to me, you'd probably need a clinical background:

Medical Writer You will prepare accurate scientific content for a range of medical communications materials in order to satisfy internal editorial and account standards and external client needs in terms of quality, focus and timing
