teachers coming to your house??

my husband's workmate was telling him that their little girl is starting school soon. Apparently the teacher is coming out to their home to see what sort of home he comes from - does this sound right? Does that happen with every child?

Perfectly normal. My friend has just got a job as a teaching assistant and she is accompanying the reception teacher on home visits to meet all of the new children. The things reception teacher said she would come here to meet them before they started school if they didn't go to nursery.

Neither of my kids had home visits, but my friend who lives in the next town had a visit for both of her kids.
