I have recently finished my degree, and fortunately am able to pay off my student loan almost immediately. I have about 5k in personal debt on credit cards/overdraft, which I want to pay asap and the save money to go travelling. I am quite interested in working in the building trade or something similar to save the money, as I've heard these jobs can pay very well, and I'm physically quite fit. How would I go about getting such a job?

The usual places to locate vacancies in this type of work are your local job centre or in the local press.  I assume you mean you do not want graduate work but are just looking to earn money quickly.  Look in yellow pages for adverts of local building firms and contact them for yourself, many vacancies are filled by word of mouth if possible to save on advertising costs.  Have a look at this webpage which gives a good overview of the work involved

Best of luck!

pay your personal debts first. your student loan is a very preferential rate of interest (at rate of inflation so equvialent to no interest) and there is no risk of losing homes/passing debt on if you die/having to pay if you are unemployed/sick plus you don;t have to pay it back unless you are earning over 14000 ish. And it gets written off when you are 60.

Pay your student loan off last - it is the cheapest loan you can get. Consider it a tax on your earnings rather than a loan...
