Personal data

I wish to read my personal file at work but have been told that i need write a letter to the HR department to arrange an appointment. Surely if it is MY personal file I should be allowed to view it at any time. Call me paranoid but I get the feeling that this stalling is so that they can remove anything from it they wish. I mean I wouldn't know would I. Anyone out there got any idea how I stand legally on this one?

Everyone has the right, under the Data Protection Act, to ensure that the infromation that any organisation (including your employer) holds on them is correct, and if there are errors, to have them corrected. Under the act, they can make a charge, usually about 10.00.
