Does anyone do freelance proofreading as a job? It's something I have been thinking about for some time. Is it difficult to get into? Do you phone publishers and go from there?

my flatmate did that correspondence proofreading course that is always advertised in the back of papers.  He strung it out over many years but found the course really interesting and well taught, but given that he's never got any work out of it he thinks it wasn't really that good an investment.  He did try and get work, joined agencies etc, but no luck.  He said most publishers wanted people with experience!  But don't let that stop you - maybe he gave up to soon.  Why don't you call publishers now and ask them how it works? Good luck!
