Is it ok to get a bottle or something for the postman at christmas? They are a great team where I live and I want them to know that my appreciation is sincere. Do you think they would be insulted? Would it be better to take a box of bikkies round to the sorting office instead? Or do you tip them? what do y'all think?

Sure get them whatever you like but from my experiences where I live, don't post it too them or one of the thieving barstards will nick it.
I'm sure your postman will be delighted to receive a bottle and a token of your appreciation, unless he's a Muslim or belongs to another religion which forbids alcohol, in which case a nice box of speciality biscuits or a home made basket of fruit would probably be very acceptable.

Your postman would be most greatful for any gift you would give him. As an employee of Royal Mail NOT all postal workers are on the nick,

We tip all 3 paper boys (they are all boys, one for daily, one for weekends, and one for the local rag), the postman and the milkman. We put some coins in an Xmas card and leave it hanging out of the letterbox just before they'll be coming round. It might seem a bit tight, but if every house game them a couple of quid each they could probably buy themselves an ipod!!!

I owuldn't take a box of biccies round the sorting office - there will be HUNDREDS of them there (posties, not biccies!!) and they'll get a crumb each. Better to make a gift to your actual postman. We know ours by name - cos he gives us an Xmas card too now! :-) In fact - we always wave to him and he waves back if we pass him in the street. And we don't live in a village either! :-)

What a lovely thought- you've made me feel guilty now!! Althought we have a different postie most days- i assume they are stand -in - or relief posties due to xmas card rush etc - I think a box of biccis or a bottle of plonk is a fab idea . but in case you get an xmas relief postie, wait for him/her to post mail then give goodies, when you know it's your regular xxx
Our postie left a load of the pressies people had given him in our house last year - he had too many to carry, so he came to pick them all up after his shift!
IF I had a regular postman, I would willingly give a generous Christmas gift. To all you lucky people who know their postman - look after him/her, they may just be able to stay on your round. For some unexplained reason I have had dozens of different posties this year which pretty obviously causes delays etc. I should think any postal worker would be highly delighted to receive a personal gift to show your appreciation.
My folks always leave a six-pack of lager out for the binmen at new year ... :-)
