You don't have to worry about it. Your potential employer will get all the checks done (in fact you cannot request them yourself) and they should meet the cost.

Forgot to explain that working with children requires and enhance check an it is this that that you cannot request yourself. You can request your own basic check.

NJ, i tried to get a summer job in scarborough few years ago working with children, they told me i was too late. Because the b.check needed several weeks to process.

Yes, I have an 'enhanced disclosure' as it is called. You need it for working with 'vulnerable people ' including children and the elderly. If your employer wants it THEY have to pay. In fact, you CAN'T get it yourself, it HAS to be requested by your employer. So, if and when you are offered the job the employer will apply for your disclosure.

As has (sort of) been indicated, you can't get a DBS check (at the relevant level) carried out on yourself. It has to be carried out (with your permission) by a potential employer (or voluntary organisation, as appropriate).

The only check you can get on yourself is a 'basic disclosure' but such a check only shows convictions which aren't 'spent':

The two higher levels of DBS checks ('standard' and 'enhanced') are only available to relevant employers and voluntary organisations and can only be sought when the applicant is seeking work which is exempted from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.

Both such levels show ALL criminal convictions (including those which are regarded as 'spent' for most other purposes). An 'enhanced' check (which is what is required to work in close contact with children) also shows any other information that the police might consider relevant.
