My wife has had enough of my inability to keep work and so have I for that matter, im 47 and held down work for 13 years until my daughter was almost born. I then took a trainee management post with a fast food restaurant which ended because I wasn't suited to the post. I got a supervisory certificate and IT qualifications and took jobs which tended to last only short periods of time. We ran a small business for 2 years and then I retrained in teaching which although providing an income through supply work has not provided permanent employment. I cant seem to keep anything even as far as the probationery period ,, I just dont seem to fit in, how do I get over thiS, any help or advice would me much appreciated

Have they given you any feedback when you have not lasted the probationary period? It's hard to help when we dont really know what the problem is.
Are you a good timerkeeper or a clockwatcher? Do you go the extra mile? Are you enthusiastic in your jobs and come up with ideas for more efficiency, improving the way things can be done or are you happy just jogging along doing the minimum amount you can and getting paid for it? Do you regard your employers and your bosses as "Them, i.e. The Management" or are you able to project yourself into being part of a team? Perhaps you are a loner so that people feel uncomfortable working with you and you might be better employed working in a more solitary role of some kind? Without knowing a lot more about you and your personality it's a little difficult to know what to suggest. Do you sense within yourself where your deficiencies are and can you give us any more clues?

Whilst agreeing with all that is said above, I wonder if your attitude is going to be one of the issues? I suspect that, given your recent history, you may feel a little reluctant to commit lots of energy and new ideas to jobs, when you feel that any day now, they'll be telling you 'thanks, but no thanks'. Certainly with supply work, there is a temporary nature to it, that might accentuate the attitude of 'get through the day' and 'no point making signficant changes or suggestions, cos I'm not going to be here next week/tomorrow anyway'. Perhaps you need to give the new employer (and yourself) a chance to show how well you can do.

You mention 'until your daughter was born' - is this more relevant than you have gone into - is there an underlying issue that you have not explained? I'm no psychologist, but on the basis that you mention it, perhaps it is more relevant that you state/think?

Also, as WendyS says, consider what kind of jobs you want to be doing - do you prefer to work on your own, in a group, outside, inside, paperwork, active, data, language etc. Perhaps you are focusing on the wrong types of jobs for some reason.

There's something right for all of us out there, if we take the time and make the effort to find it. GOOD LUCK!

I used to be a bit like that,I would walk out of a job without thinking of the future But , luckily I had a Trade and went self employed 26 years ago, isn't there any way you could do something similar, If you trained as a teacher, what was it in ? couldn't you Give private tuition that pays pretty well and you wouldn't have to work full time!
