I qualified as a nurse after 3 years hard study. I can't get a job at my local trust. I'm 51, can't change direction at my age and feel useless and frustrated. anyone else out there in my position from the greater manchester area?
Any ideas about what I should do - besides quit moaning?

things change round very quickly in the nhs. In a few months they will realise they need nurses, and then the government will be moaned at for not training enough. Have you tried nursing homes? Private hospitals? Away from your local area? communuty rather than hospital based? agencies?
When i trained 10 years ago i was in the exact sam position - 110 of us qualifying and about 10 jobs, so what i did was move away. However, i was 22 at the time so it was a bit less of a wrench than it might be at 51

thanks for that.
Itried going on the 'bank' staff register and nursing homes but they want me to have my 6 months preceptorship first. Can't do that without getting a job! Catch 22!!

I'm 38 and halfway through my training, we have all been promised a job in one of the trust hospitals when we qualify whether they are advertising or not.
is there nothing your school of nursing can do for you? ours have been really helpful to those who have just finished in march and as far as i know all have either moved away and/or got jobs.
do you have to stay in the area? I have heard that nurses are going abroad and are being snapped up as soon as they qualify.
hope you find something - I'm feeling a bit nervous myself at the moment too.
When did you qualify and what have you applied for?
Have you got an exemplary attendance record from during your training?
Are there any issues from during your training that may hinder your employment?

Sorry to ask but obviously these things would have a baring on you gaining work as a nurse.

Assuming that the above is ok, then i would say, troll the local NHS website DAILY. Jobs come up all the time. Apply for anything and everything. Look in your local PCT as well because the NHS is moving towards 'elderly care at home' 'community hospitals' and 'intermediate care'.

Also, check with someone that your application forms are completed satisfactorarily and reallyt 'sell' you..

Have you born in mind also, that places like Marks & Spencers and British Airways are always looking out for nurses to employ?

Good luck.
