Losing a days pay for pulling a sickie

Just wondering, those of you that don't get paid if you are off sick, what do you work as? I work in the public sector and have worked in banks and other organisations and have never come across this before

At the moment I work in customer services.

If I pull a sick day I will not get paid for that day, if I have more than 3 days off I can get a form from work and sometimes they will pay you a days wage but you have to have 3 or more days off to qualify. Sometimes they decide you don't qualify, it's up to the your place of work.

Saying that, where I work, If you take a sickie you can put it in as a Annual Lui Day and it will come of you days off for the year.

Any private sector company or small firm set their own rules for sick pay. SSP cannot be avoided, but is not payable for the first three days of sick leave, and then is very little money.

Those in the public sector are molly coddled - no wonder there is higher sickness levels in that sector when the employees get full pay for six months, then half pay plus SSP or incapacity benefit.

I wouldn't mind, but it's my taxes that pay for it!

To be honest our company are thinking of doing this, the reason? because people keep taking sickies. The main reason is "I can't come in today little simon has a headache" Little Simon is 14 years old but it happens regularly and now we all have to suffer because of it. It seems to be happening a lot now but maybe we only have ourselves to blame.

Ethel, I have worked in the public sector for years, and I can assure you that we are not "molly coddled" when it comes to sick leave. Where i work there are strict rules over the amount of sick leave.

For example, i know one member of staff, hard working etc, been in their post for 10 months and had one day off sick. As a result of this they were not allowed to go for promotion and good a written warning for having taken too much sick leave.

Perhaps this must be different in the public sector where you live

ahh, I was just going to ask a question relating to this:

My G/F works as a teaching assistant for a school in Camden and has just fractured her metatarsal......So you are saying she will get full pay while she is off?.

I work as a service advisor in a garage and we dont get paid for sick days ! Its rubbish!

IT Contractor. No work=no pay, as we are self employed.
Strangely, rates of absence are very low! :-)
