Have you tried the Construction Industry Training Board and the National Construction College? target=_blank>http://www.citb.org.uk/ncc/"> Click here for link.
I've yet to master links, it seems. The address is www.citb.org.uk/ncc/. If you have a query about a specific trade or trades I will try to help (I have been involved in all aspects of construction for a long time). If anybody reading this could tell me where I've gone wrong in posting this link I should be most grateful to laern.

(Maude - to add a link: 1. hit the spacebar several times; 2. paste in the entire url (starting http...); 3. hit the spacebar several times. The spaces are the key. Don't know why! - AB Editor)
Many thanks indeed, AB Ed. This was my first attempt at a link - I (wrongly) followed the HTML Tutorial referred to elsewhere in AB! Congratulations upon the standards you maintain for AB, it is an excellent site. Seasonal best wishes. Maude.

The link for the Construction Industry Training Board is http://www.citb.org.uk/citb_home.htm
There is a careers section at this link, and the link also takes you on to the National Construction Colleges Prospectus 2004, City and Guilds, etc. There are no one day courses anywhere in the country that would let you try out being a bricklayer, carpenter, etc. for a day, but plenty of career advice is available through the CITB, who might be willing to arrange a visit for you visit an active building site to see the physical work of the main trades and view working conditions. There is also the Building Book Shop, 26 Store Street, a turning halfway along Tottenham Court Road, which has descriptive books of every construction trade.
